Butel back with Speedworks for Championship challenge in LMP3 Cup

LMP3 Cup race winner Jack Butel returns to the Championship in 2018 with the Speedworks outfit he competed with last season. The Jersey native added a brilliant solo win at Donington Park in the rain to third and second place finishes at Spa Francorchamps and Snetterton respectively, rounding off a hat-trick of podium finishes.

21-year old Butel moved to sportscar racing last year after competing in Formula Renault and the F4 British Championship, and quickly got to grips with the Ligier JS P3, steadily improving his performance to finish third in the Drivers’ Championship standings.

The youngster has also added endurance racing with Speedworks to his repertoire, scoring two class wins in Dubai in January. "Racing the Ligier in Dubai has given me an even better understanding of the car and how it works in longer distance events," he said. "I'm feeling confident after a good start to the year and hopefully we can bring what we've learnt to the LMP3 Cup. We’re planning an extensive testing programme in Portugal next month which will ensure we hit the ground running for the season opener at Donington Park in April."

Both Jack and the Speedworks team are setting their sights on European success in the future. "I'm proud and excited to have Jack back for the 2018 season," said Christian Dick, Managing Director at Speedworks. "He signed off last season with a race win after improving all year and I am sure we can go out and challenge for the championship. LMP3 Cup is now the perfect stepping stone onto the sportscar ladder, running on Michelin tires which brings it in line with European Le Mans Series and Michelin Le Mans Cup, and the prize of an entry into MLMC is certainly something to aim for.

"Preparations start in earnest over the coming weeks with a test planned in Portimão where we aim to get Jack back to his race winning pace at Donington ahead of the new season. We also have a state of the art simulator installed at our Workshop which Jack will be using to get an advantage over his rivals."
